My Early Journey with Maze Fathom
The journey to starting Maze Fathom began with a period of introspection. After leaving the jewelry industry, I found myself at a crossroads, searching for my next move.
I explored different industries, considered new job opportunities, and reflected deeply on what I wanted to do with my life. But nothing felt right. I realized that I didn’t just want a job; I wanted to build something meaningful—something that could help others while aligning with my passions.
In the midst of my search, my wife gave me a gentle but pivotal reminder: “You’re always looking for backpacks.” That simple observation sparked something within me. I’d always been fascinated by backpacks—their design, functionality, and ability to accompany people on their journeys. That’s when the idea for Maze Fathom began to take shape.
In August 2024, I started sketching drafts of my ideal backpack. I wanted it to be lightweight, functional, and designed to empower people on their own paths. With a clear vision in mind, I sought out an industrial designer who could bring my ideas to life. Together, we began the journey of turning a concept into a tangible product.
Looking back, I believe fate had been preparing me for this all along. My first summer job, at a textile company, introduced me to the world of materials and manufacturing. I revisited those early lessons, diving into the fundamentals of textiles and production.
I even traveled to Guangzhou’s raw material markets to source samples, immersing myself in the process from the ground up. By September 2, 2024, Maze Fathom was officially established.
Before launching, I spent countless hours researching materials and understanding the intricate details that go into creating a high-quality product. My experience as a finance journalist also played a significant role in shaping my journey.
Covering challenging industries taught me how to adapt quickly, ask the right questions, and understand the mechanics of business. Visiting factories during those years provided invaluable insights into how products are made, what drives costs, and how to evaluate quality—skills that are now at the heart of Maze Fathom.
The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has been deeply fulfilling. Every step, from ideation to execution, has been a learning experience. The values of resilience, curiosity, and attention to detail—lessons from my past—guide me every day as I build Maze Fathom.
My goal is to create gear that inspires exploration, resilience, and purpose—products that empower people to navigate their own unique journeys.
